Legend has it that about 5,000 years ago, Lei Zu, the wife of an ancient tribal leader in China, was enjoying a cup of tea underneath a mulberry tree in the garden, when a cocoon dropped from the sky into her tea. She marvelled at the glistening thread as it began to unravel and this began her fascination and cultivation of what we now know today as silk.
In 202 BC, the Silk Road was opened, an ancient trade route, connected the two major civilizations of China and Rome. The word silk took about a thousand years to travel from China through Central Asia to Northern Europe. The Silk Road derives its name from its most prized commodity, silk, which played a central role in trade along the route. In some countries, silk is even used as currency.
People marveled at Chinese silk, and silk became a symbol of luxury and popular among nobles in various countries.
