Ice silk fabric isn’t actually made from “ice” but rather refers to materials that give a cooling sensation when worn. These materials include nylon fibers and regenerated cellulose fibers such as viscose, modal, and lyocell. When used in clothing or bedding, they provide a noticeably cool feeling. Instant Cooling Sensation
The cooling effect of ice silk fabric comes from an instant sensation when your skin touches the fabric. This happens because the fabric is cooler than your skin. As soon as your skin comes into contact with the fabric, heat is rapidly transferred from your body to the fabric, causing your skin temperature to drop. This cooling sensation is then processed by the temperature-sensitive nerve endings in your skin, signaling your brain to feel cool. The following characteristics of ice silk contribute to this sensation:
1. High Thermal Conductivity
Fabrics made from fibers with high thermal conductivity transfer heat more efficiently, leading to a more pronounced cooling effect. The higher the conductivity, the faster the heat transfer between your skin and the fabric. Nylon fibers are known for their high thermal conductivity, which allows heat to quickly dissipate from your skin, making you feel cooler. This is similar to touching a towel versus a metal object at room temperature—while both are at the same temperature, the metal feels cooler because of its higher thermal conductivity.

Regenerated cellulose fibers, like viscose, don’t have as high thermal conductivity as nylon, but they excel in moisture absorption and breathability. These fibers absorb sweat and moisture from your skin faster than cotton, drawing it to the outer layer of the fabric, which helps remove excess heat and keeps you feeling cool. Their breathability also ensures that sweat doesn’t stay on your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable.
3. Smooth, Flat Fabric Surface
A fabric with a smooth, flat surface provides a more noticeable cooling sensation upon contact. This is because a smooth surface increases the contact area between the fabric and your skin, allowing heat to disperse more quickly.
4. Cooling Finishing Technology
Modern finishing techniques also play a role in enhancing the cooling effect of ice silk fabrics. For example, cooling silicone oil has been developed as a new type of softener to meet market demands. It improves thermal conductivity, resulting in a more instant cooling sensation. Clothes treated with cooling silicone oil not only feel cooler but also offer a soft, silky touch, similar to baby skin.
However, cooling silicone oil treatments are not very durable; the cooling effect diminishes after several washes. Prolonged use of products treated with these agents could also lead to skin issues, such as clogged pores or allergies.
