Silk uses Momme to indicate the thickness of the fabric. The larger the number, the thicker the fabric and the higher the price. At present, silk fabrics are commonly used in 12, 16, 19, 22, 25, and 30 Momme. 1 Momme (m/m)= 4.3056 grams / sqm.
- 12 Momme (12g) : Relatively thin and transparent, suitable for silk scarves, sleep masks.
- 14 Momme (60g) : Thicker than 14 Momme, but also transparent, suitable for making lining.
- 16 Momme (68g) : Thicker, not see-through, suitable for pajamas.
- 19 Momme (81g) : Light, but easy to snag, suitable for blouses and pajamas.
- 22 Momme (94g) : Cost-effective, not easy to snag, suitable for bedding.
- 30 Momme (129g) : Thick, less chance of snagging, expensive.
- 40+ Momme (172g) : Suitable for trench coats.
Therefore, sometimes the higher the Momme number is not the better, each product has a suitable Momme number.
